Review:
This was a great Pearl Jam show, but declaring a PJ show “great” is like declaring grass … green.
This was a great crowd. It was hard to hear EV’s voice at times because everyone in the MGM Grand Garden Arena was singing along to every word of every song (you can see an example of this in this youtube video). Even the somewhat lessor known songs. There were people from all over the country, and each one was a hardcore PJ fan. Vegas has to be the best place in the world for concerts, because fans fly in from all over the country to see particular bands and once these major fans and the band get under one roof, the crowd and the band feeds off of each other like few other cities … and that includes Madison Square Garden.
Vegas crowds are the best crowds. Period.
PJ opened the show with Mike McCready-penned “Inside Job” which sounded 100 times better live than on CD.
I have always said that McCready was arguably the most underrated guitarist on the planet, and that was on full display at this show.
Blistering solos to close out songs, and everyone in the band appeared to be in great spirits.
This concert took place on George W. Bush’s birthday, and EV said “this next song is for the birthday boy”, then the band launched headfirst into CCR’s “Fortunate Son”, followed by a 5 minute version of “Porch” on which all band members jammed with fervor.
It was a headstrong and energetic close to the show rather than the winding down of “Yellow Ledbetter” as usual.
Every Pearl Jam show is a great show and it’s a show that you cannot miss.
You cannot really write a review of Pearl Jam. They are Pearl Jam. And almost everyone knows exactly what that means.
