Comments:
A work in progress, with potential.
I dropped by to play cards for the first time at the new Suncoast Poker Room.
I walked right up to the podium, and was ignored for about 3 minutes. The podium guy was doing something, apparently more important than talking to me, so I stood for awhile. He eventually got around to me and I asked him what games were going. They had 2/4 Limit, 4/8 Limit, and 1/2 No Limit. Okay, so they had 2 tables of Bingo and one table of Poker. What to do … what to do. I went ahead and chose to play poker. $100 Minimum/$300 Max Buy-In.
Okay, here is where something pissed me off on a grandiose scale. I handed him my Coast Card, and he said “Oh, that is no good here, you need a Poker Room Card”.
I have a Coast slot card, then the Coast blackjack pit made me get a pit card, and now the Coast poker room makes me get a poker card? What the frigging fucking fuck??? I HAVE TO CARRY THREE CARDS WITH ME TO PLAY AT A COAST CASINO!!!
Oh, and by the way, each Coast Pit and Poker Room has their own cards, so if you go to multiple Coast Casino’s, you can get up to 10 cards … easily. Fuck!
That is asinine beyond asinine, about 10 miles beyond asinine.
Why can’t they issue you ONE card to use for every game? I don’t know. Nobody knows. Rumor has it that you will soon need to get a new Coast card to park your car, and yet another one to take a piss. Seriously, the sheer number of cards that Coast makes you carry around is nothing less than obscene and the subject of much local ridicule. Come on guys, welcome to the 21st century. One card should fit all. Let your computers talk to each other like every other casino on the planet. I need a brand new wallet just to carry your gaming cards.
But I digress. I get yet another card and stick it in the money slot of my wallet since the rest of the slots are already filled with every other card Coast issues.
The gentleman tells me that we earn $1.25/hour with this card. Not bad.
I take a seat.
The room is not an afterthought like I thought it would be. It was decked out for poker.
The room is located in the back right next to the movie theaters and bathrooms. The Suncoast room is medium size, but has only 12 tables. They are very far apart, and it is easy to walk around. It is clean. All tables are new and have auto-shufflers. They also have rolling chairs. I really like rolling chairs and found this to be a very good thing. The tables were an interesting blue felt without drink-holders. This could be a good or bad thing depending on how you feel about drink holders, but since the built in holders tend to get nasty, I think the acrylic plastic coaster things they give you to hold beverages are sufficient. The tables are plush and comfortable and more than roomy enough. There are 12 plasma screens ringing the room showing everything from CNN to CNBC to ESPN. Excellent. A very nicely laid out and professional card room.
The dealers, well …. they are very nice, but they are not poker dealers yet. In 2 hours I had about 15 misdeals (I am not joking). Cards were flipping over left and right like 6 shoe blackjack. As a matter of fact, I think these are blackjack dealers pulling poker duty. Lots and lots of mistakes. I had to ask for my change on calls sometimes, some general confusion over who gets what pot, and lots of overturned cards.
Being a new room, and given that they apologized profusely, everyone understood and there was no drama. I am sure these dealers will get better with time and it probably won’t be an issue in a week.
There was only one no-limit table running, and the competition was rotating in and out. The “all-in” play was very popular, and we got down to a few players several times as people busted out. Plenty of calling stations and maniacs rotating in and out with plenty of rocks. There was a little bit of everything while I was there. It’s hard to get a read on this room from this one brief visit. The Bingo tables were always packed. Us locals love our bingo, what can I tell you …
I am not sure if the waitresses are yet familiar with the poker room. After 45 minutes of no service, I walked over to the little convenience mart and got a drink. Then when I got back, a thong-wearing waitress (and aren’t those thongs why Coast exists?) came into the room and asked people for drinks. But she skipped my table. Glad I went and got my own drink. Again, I am sure this will improve. I couldn’t get a drink to save my ass when Red Rock first opened, but now they come by every 10 minutes. Growing pains.
The $1/$2 game was a typical $1/$2 NL game. Straight up fun poker with a variety of different characters ranging from rock solid to nut case maniacs. A good mix. I doubled up on a high pocket pair by going All-In, and I got called by the calling station who showed 7-8 offsuit. Why did he call $80 with 7-8o? I have no fucking idea, but bless his heart for doing so. Everyone else folded. Like I said, a real mix. You should be able to make some cash here unless you just have a run of terrible luck.
The room is not marked, nor are there any signs to it. Just go to the movie theater and there it is.
It’s a very good start and I can only imagine that it will get better. They decked the room out comfortably with lots of TV screens, great quality equipment and the like.
As soon as the staff becomes a little more attentive (including the waitresses), and when the dealers get more comfortable dealing poker, and when they consolidate player’s cards so that you can use all of your comps on one card, this could conceivably be someone’s home room.
They have many bugs to iron out, but they are trying, and it’s a good start.
It’s almost unfair to review a 3-day-old room. It’s not anywhere near the Red Rock Room yet, but I can honestly say that the place does have potential. I am sure a loyal following will develop. I’m sure I will spend many an hour playing here as well.
