This room is kind of my super-secret room (well, not anymore I suppose). One of my favorites.
It’s not fancy at all. It has, I think, one TV (which nobody watches), it has no eye-candy wwaitresses, there is basically NO drink service in the room (so bring your own). Heck, you don’t even get any comps that I know of.
The tables are standard, with auto-shuffle, and the chairs are adequate enough.
So, why do I like this room?
Well, first of all, super modern and fancy does not always equate to a good poker environment. I concentrate on the cards. This room has few distractions, and it feels like a straight-forward poker room where poker is the main focus. Average age is in the 40’s, and not alot of Matt-Damon-In-Rounders wannabe’s. Not that many fish either. Not all the players are rocks, you will get action … but people will usually lay down when they have obviously missed the flop. They won’t chase you to the river with a C-note in hand ready to buy back in if they miss the inside straight draw. On the other hand, they will never hit that draw to bust you out.
This can be good at times, because you are playing cards with people that actually know to play cards. You probably won’t double or triple up here, but you can grind out 50% over several hours, with few maniacal bad beats. Your money is fairly safe unless you play like a moron, and you can often play usually play for a long time on your buy-in. Not alot of drunken bravado to cloud your judgment here.
Every now and then I just want to sit back and play some cards without any drama, no “look at me, look at me!”’s and no drunken frat-types raising $100 on 7-4o. Sure, that can be profitable, but it can also be frustrating.
And this is the place to play sans the drama.
The room is only a 3 minute walk from the Flamingo Monorail Stop, they have my game of choice going 24/7 (1-2 No Limit), and I can almost always get into a game within 10 minutes. There is a cab stand right under the room, and the front door which opens to the strip is a mere 60 second walk.
This poker room is the most accessible room on the strip, and is arguably in the best location in Las Vegas. Smack in the middle of the Vegas Strip, on the monorail, trolley, bus, and cab. The room is less than a couple minute walk from any entrance. And if you just have to drive, the garage is not as bad as most.
It’s not crowded, offers good games, has a very cordial staff, has very competent dealers, and has courteous yet good players who are mature and relaxed. Few bad beats or silliness, and the chance to make some money when you get dealt reasonable cards.
After a few days at MGM or Mandalay, this room can be just what the doctor ordered to get you back on track with how the game is actually played. More poker, less gambling.
If they would just send a waitress around every now and then, and maybe comp play on the Total Rewards card, I would play here even more often.
