I was at the Neon Boneyard today, and I took it upon myself to take a stroll through the surrounding neighborhood.
I almost got shot, but apparently my camera doesn’t command a high enough street price to even attempt stealing. That’s kind of depressing.
Anyway, after narrowly avoiding getting jacked, I turned another corner and stumbled upon some enterprising youths sprucing up a wall that adjoins the Boneyard.
At first I thought these guys were commissioned to add graffiti art to the wall. Their handiwork was actually quite impressive. It wasn’t the ugly, talentless gang tagging you see in South LA … but it was more like east coast train and wall bombing.
The kids probably have a future as artists if the LVMPD doesn’t shove a nightstick up their ass first.
What gave it away that this was not sanctioned work was the fact that they were all wearing black hoodies and were riding skateboards.
Frankly, if the neighborhood is already shit, I don’t have a problem with bombing. I’m sure other residents of the area have dissenting opinions, though.
I talked with one of the employees at the Boneyard, and they expect to turn it into a public museum sometime next year.
They are using the old La Concha Motel as the lobby for the new project which will be called the “Neon Museum”.
I took some photos over the fence, and you can check them out here.
I am looking forward to the opening of the “Neon Museum”.
If they do it right, it may be the largest non-casino tourist attraction Downtown.
