The Echelon Depression

I swung by Echelon Place at about 1pm this afternoon.
It was quite a depressing sight.
There were news vans parked at the corner of LVB and Stardust covering the story, and construction workers were everywhere as they were packing up their gear and leaving.
The mood was very sullen as I watched probably a hundred workers walk out of the construction pit.
It was a sad thing to see. These workers had families to feed and bills to pay, and they were walking away en-masse, seemingly in disbelief and/or depression.
A couple of them were shouting into their cellphones, visibly angry or upset.
I realize that the big story is about Boyd Gaming and their happy shareholders, but every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
The other side to the shareholder euphoria, is that there are now thousands of newly displaced workers here in the Las Vegas Valley who will no doubt experience unexpected hardship because of this development.
Sure, they are mere pissant workers who get what they deserve for having to work dangerous and unpredictable shit jobs because they opted not to take a four year vacation after high school, but these are the people that risk their lives and die left and right in this town so that we can play silly games inside of silly buildings.
This whole thing was a giant clusterfuck … from the moment someone got the brilliant idea to knock down the ‘Dust, until today.
