Gridlock!

Las Vegas Strip Traffic Jam

All-Star Weekend 2007.

Traffic is in utter chaos and is arguably the worst I have experienced in this town … ever.

I played some cards, visited with some folks, and checked out the All-Star happenings at the Mandalay Bay.

It took me nearly an hour to get from the Mandalay to the Tropicana (.2 Miles) on the Duece
bus, so I got off and walked. The average human being walks casually at 3Mph. This means that currently, walking is 15 times faster than bus transit on the strip.

The bus in the picture above (left lane trying to merge) is actually the bus that I got off of. As you can see, I was able to walk up to the Tropicana overpass, take the escalator up, and snap a picture of it before it was even able to get back into the flow of traffic.

It was all shoe leather and monorail transit froo there. Even getting a cab was a headache. Say what you want about the monorail, but it whisked me from the MGM to Harrah’s in about 4 minutes. The same trip would have taken a couple of hours on the bus.

The Deuce is a nice tourist thing to do once or twice, but it is a completely useless as a form of transportation during busy traffic time. It is 94% slower than walking. Luckily my 24 hour CAT pass from the previous day was still good, and it didn’t cost me anything to try and ride the Deuce this time.

We desperately need a viable form of non-surface transit here in the Central Las Vegas Valley.

When MGM City Center, Echelon Place, and Encore are completed, surface transit will be crippled even worse than it already is.

These pictures were taken between 11am and 1pm. And it just got progressively worse throughout the day. Even traffic on LVB at 6am this morning was still completely gridlocked.

I think its a shame the monorail doesn’t get any more support when traffic on the strip looks like this every day. How much is this costing the local economy? Surely mass-transit public transport would be a good way to spend some public money.
